CUPERTINO, California—January 24, 2012—Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2012 first quarter which spanned 14 weeks and ended December 31, 2011. The Company posted record quarterly revenue of $46.33 billion and record quarterly net profit of $13.06 billion, or $13.87 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $26.74 billion and net quarterly profit of $6 billion, or $6.43 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 44.7 percent compared to 38.5 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 58 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

The Company sold 37.04 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 128 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 15.43 million iPads during the quarter, a 111 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 5.2 million Macs during the quarter, a 26 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 15.4 million iPods, a 21 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter.

“We’re thrilled with our outstanding results and record-breaking sales of iPhones, iPads and Macs,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Apple’s momentum is incredibly strong, and we have some amazing new products in the pipeline.”

“We are very happy to have generated over $17.5 billion in cash flow from operations during the December quarter,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead to the second fiscal quarter of 2012, which will span 13 weeks, we expect revenue of about $32.5 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share of about $8.50.”

In order to continue to sell iPhone smartphones, Apple and BlackBerry must build plants in Argentina, a move that companies like Nokia, Samsung, Motorola and LG already made. Probably Apple and RIM won’t open such plants in Argentina, so if the Government won’t change its mind, then the Argentinians won’t be able to buy iPhone and BlackBerry smartphones from now on.

People come to the Apple Store for the experience — and they’re willing to pay a premium for that. There are lots of components to that experience, but maybe the most important — and this is something that can translate to any retailer — is that the staff isn’t focused on selling stuff, it’s focused on building relationships and trying to make people’s lives better. That may sound hokey, but it’s true. The staff is exceptionally well trained, and they’re not on commission, so it makes no difference to them if they sell you an expensive new computer or help you make your old one run better so you’re happy with it. Their job is to figure out what you need and help you get it, even if it’s a product Apple doesn’t carry. Compare that with other retailers where the emphasis is on cross-selling and upselling and, basically, encouraging customers to buy more, even if they don’t want or need it. That doesn’t enrich their lives, and it doesn’t deepen the retailer’s relationship with them. It just makes their wallets lighter.

Четкая печать на хорошей бумаге (не чета принятому нынче в Отечестве унылому слабоконтрастному говну на отрыжке ЦБК, отвергнутой даже производителями неэлитных сосисок):

В середине вставка из нескольких глянцевых страниц с фотографиями (черно-белые, хотя изначально они были цветными — см. фрагмент из 60 minutes)

Ооочень приятная толстая книга. «Берешь в руки — маешь вещь!»

Но читать ее от корки до корки я не буду. I’ve gone all digitall ;-) — электрокниги мне удобнее–привычнее: заметки, подчеркивания, закладки и просто место, на котором закончил читать, автоматически синхронизируются между айфоном и ападом, плюс встроенный словарь и поиск. Наконец, айпад на треть легче (не говоря об айфоне!). Так что продолжу ePub из iBookstore.

А новая-большая-красивая останется для тактильно-визуального удовольствия и неожиданного невольного погружения на десяток-другой страниц (что, кстати, сделать не трудно — книга отлично написана) при случайном открытии.

Как стало известно РБК daily, в правительстве прорабатывается возможность внедрения криптографически защищенных планшетных компьютеров для организации мобильного рабочего кабинета чиновника. Для этого им придется отказаться от использования популярного во власти, однако незащищенного планшетного компьютера iPad. Внедрение такой системы поможет ускорить документооборот среди ведомств, надеются эксперты.

«Предполагается, что министры, а также их замы получат возможность удаленно с использованием электронной подписи визировать документы, просматривать портфолио подчиненных и в режиме реального времени следить за исполнением собственных поручений», — говорит собеседник РБК daily в правительстве. Сейчас решается вопрос, будут ли это защищенные устройства от BlackBerry, устройства на базе Android или собственная российская разработка с использованием различных систем защиты.

I believe that this inflection point can be described as going from personal computing to personalized computing and will be defined by tablets and smartphones that take all types of shapes, form factors and designs that make the computing experience more personalized and customizable. This inflection point is just as dramatic as when the PC came on the scene and cut the chord between the mainframes and mini’s and brought personal computing local. Another way to think of this is that we are moving into a phase in which people want a PC on their desktop and in their pocket.

It’s the post-pc world.

Я же думаю, это часть, причем часть малая. Если вообще в какой либо особой степени важная (у нас уже были КПК, нетбуки, до-iPhone-смартфоны). На мой взгляд компютер стал PC тогда, когда им смогли пользоваться люди, а не только личности с паяльниками (спасибо Стиву Джобсу).

А Post-PC это когда людям не надо знать о существовании файлов. Post-PC это когда людей перестают обзывать пользователями. Это когда для того, чтобы переслать кому-то фотографию или скан паспорта их не надо вставлять в Word.

Post-PC — это айпад. (Появление айфона четыре года назад — это как производство двигателей внутреннего сгорания — охрененно круто повлияло и на индустрии и на людей, но собственно революцию произвел Ford Model T.)

«Уверенный пользователь айпад». Пиздец диагноз. Такая строчка в резюме будет всеми считаться еще большим идиотизмом, чем «продвинутый интернет-пользователь». Никто не пишет в резюме про умение завязывать шнурки.

Сегодня мой наш общий парикмахер (тот еще чайник самоварник в компах!) попросил меня купить в Бангкоке для его мамы айпад, потому что вообще-то она просит компьютер — «ну, знаешь, интернет там, фотки,…» — но он думает, что «она с ним не справится, а еще вирусы».

Ни ползвука о том, что не настольный или переносной или еще какой. Компьютер — это то, с чем надо управляться.

iPhone Sales Grow 142 Percent; iPad Sales Grow 183 Percent

CUPERTINO, California—July 19, 2011—Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2011 third quarter ended June 25, 2011. The Company posted record quarterly revenue of $28.57 billion and record quarterly net profit of $7.31 billion, or $7.79 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $15.70 billion and net quarterly profit of $3.25 billion, or $3.51 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 41.7 percent compared to 39.1 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 62 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

The Company sold 20.34 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 142 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 9.25 million iPads during the quarter, a 183 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 3.95 million Macs during the quarter, a 14 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 7.54 million iPods, a 20 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter.

“We’re thrilled to deliver our best quarter ever, with revenue up 82 percent and profits up 125 percent,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Right now, we’re very focused and excited about bringing iOS 5 and iCloud to our users this fall.”

“We are extremely pleased with our performance which drove quarterly cash flow from operations of $11.1 billion, an increase of 131 percent year-over-year,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead to the fourth fiscal quarter of 2011, we expect revenue of about $25 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share of about $5.50.”

Ecosystem, ecosystem, ecosystem. iOS, iTunes, App Store, Apple Store, iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, service, support, accessories. It all works better with Apple. It may cost more money, though this is doubtful. Apple marketing may suggest we are all metrosexuals. Steve Jobs very well may be a dick. Apple users may be sheep. But the ecosystem is hands-down a minimum two standard deviations better than anything Google Android can offer. Why wouldn’t you choose that?

With iCloud, Apple is transforming the cloud from an almost tangible place that you visit to find your stuff, to a place that only exists in the background. It’s never seen. You never interact with it, your apps do — and you never realize it. It’s magic.
